In a testament to his dedication, Cuban doctor Felix Baez Sarria, returned to Sierra Leone Tuesday to continue working with on treating patients with Ebola in the African country.

Dr. Baez himself contracted the virus in November while working among the other Cuban health professionals in Sierra Leone who are in the region to help saves lives and stem the spread of the deadly disease. Dr. Baez was sent to hospital in Geneva where he received successful treatment.

Ebola has hit the West African region hard, resulting in over 8,000 deaths and more than 20,000 infections.

The Cuban doctor, who is among the hundreds of Cubans who volutneered to go to the region, announced in December of 2014 his intention to return to Sierra Leone to rejoin his colleagues as soon as his health permitted. "I will return there to finish what I started," Baez said at the time.

The Cuban commitment to treating Ebola patients in West Africa has won international praise, especially given that the small island’s contributions have been more substantial than those from many wealthy countries. The country has sent 3 teams of medical professionals to the West African region

Cuba has also received widespread acclaim for its “medical solidarity,” regularly sending doctors from its socialized medical system to countries throughout the world when needed, in particular after natural disasters.
