JOHANNESBURG - The Mandela family is planning to meet before the end of December to try resolve differences among its members.

Several reports have suggested that the family is feuding.

Over the weekend the family performed a traditional ritual called ukuhlamba iipeki or the washing of the spades.

“The ritual entails the washing or the cleansing of the tools that utilised during the preparations of the grave site for the former statesman. It is a tradition that AbaThembu honours once seven days have passed after the funeral,” said Spokesperson of the AbaThembu Royal Family, Daludumo Mtirara.

The AbaThembu Royal House said it is disappointed over reports of family infighting.

The Royal House described a statement released by Mandela’s ex-wife, Winnie Madikizela-Mandela, as a violation of custom and tradition.

The statement announced that Mandela’s eldest daughter, Makaziwe Mandela, is now the head of the Mandela family.

Then on Sunday, the City Press reported that Mandela’s widow, Graca Machel, is being sidelined and ill- treated by his children and grandchildren

Mtirara said the family has not yet met to discuss these reports, but he called on the family to “behave with discipline”.

“We are quite concerned about what we found in the media which we can describe as disrespectful of our culture, of our custom and tradition. We want to appeal to the members of the Mandela family to refrain from what they are doing and from what we read in the media about themselves. They must start now to act respectfully,” said Mtirara.

The Royal House is also appealing to the family to honour Nelson Mandela’s will when it is released.

“We understand that there is a will we want each and every member of the family to respect the will and to ensure that we act accordingly,” said Mtirara.

The royal clan will meet before the end of this month to discuss the reports in the media and to allow the elders to give guidance to the Mandela family. - eNCA
