THE SOUTH AFRICAN COMMUNIST PARTY

STATEMENT BY THE SACP WESTERN CAPE ON THE HECKLING OF PRESIDENT ZUMA AT THE MANDELA MEMORIAL SERVICE

Neo liberal Media elevating Anarchist to attack credibility of President Jacob Zuma

The South African Communist Party in the Western Cape condemns with the contempt it deserves the booing of the State President during the most august occasion in the calendar of our history, a send-off in celebrating the life of the most disciplined and tolerant leader of our time.

We were very embarrassed by the thuggery and a well coordinated attack by some handful traitors to the Mandela family, South Africa and the Africa at large in the world stage.

This attack organised by those who never accepted the democratic process that bestowed President Jacob Zuma as the driver of the Anti thesis Colonialism of a Special Type in advancing our National Democratic revolution was an assault to a democracy itself. As the SACP we are convinced that the booing was an act of hooliganism perpetuated by elements of EFF thugs and COPE reactionaries that used this occasion to fight the ANC .This behaviour should be condemned by all democrats as it has a potential to undermine what Madiba stood for.

As we continue to mourn this gigantic life, which was a product of the political discipline of our movement, The African National Congress, we would like to appeal to all South Africans to emulate his values of human respect and political tolerance. While the media has a role to inform the public, we don’t see anything special that warranted the wide coverage of this booing, as it does not have any relevance in educating the public about the life of comrade Mandela.

It is within this context that we believe that centrally to media excitement about the booing is a testament to the constant class contradictions between the working class and the capitalist media. Being the subsidiary of the capitalist class, the media went so as low as to compare the eloquency of President Obama and President Zuma without any regard to the content of their speeches.

The neo-liberal media informed by its second agenda narrowly draws conclusion that paints President Zuma as the most unpopular leader while projecting President Obama as the most popular leader in the South African soil. During the process, the neo liberal media ignored the fact that the booing was orchestrated by a very small section who had political mileage to achieve while the rest of the stadium cheered at their President Zuma.

The working class and the entire South African society cannot be fooled by the media’s desperation to deliver a pre-determined outcome. The entire society is fairly aware that this misinformation has nothing to do with President Zuma’s popularity but everything to do influencing the ideological and political directions of our country.

As the SACP we condemn the subjective coverage that some media houses continue to perpetuate, media has a responsibility to inform the public through balanced and objective reporting.

We therefore appeal to the media to focus on the true story of Nelson Mandela and stop diverting attention to advance narrow interests. We equally demand that the values that were embedded by the ANC to comrade Mandela must be respected and preserved by all, even those who have different political views.
