African Union chairwoman Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma

When former president Nelson Mandela looked for assistance during the apartheid struggle, doors opened for him, African Union chairwoman Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma said at the FNB Stadium on Tuesday.

"Wherever he went on our continent, doors were opened," she said.

"He got military training and he got support for the struggle during apartheid."

During his presidency, Mandela championed peace and security on the continent, she said. He cemented friendships and relationships with the world.

"On behalf of the AU, we express our sincere condolences to Ma Graca [Mandela's widow Graca Machel], Ma Winnie [his ex-wife Winnie Madikizela-Mandela], the children, the grandchildren and entire Madiba family," she said.

"Thank you for surrendering him for the service of humanity."

Mandela hated oppression, and did everything he could to ensure a better country and world, said Dlamini-Zuma.

"Tata, we thank you for your countless sacrifices... You gifted us with a better world than what we were born in," said Dlamini-Zuma.

"We thank you for having mentored us.... We shall miss u Tata, but we know you will be watching over us and guiding us," she said.

"You may now have your well-deserved rest."
