Mozambican Prime minister Alberto Vaquina on Friday paid homage to the late South African leader Nelson Mandela who passed away late Thursday at the age of 95.

"We received with sorrow and consternation the death of Nelson Mandela. We send our condolences to Graca Machel and the rest of Mandela family," said the prime minister.

The two neighboring nations have enjoyed very close relations. Mandela was married to Graca Machel Mandela, the former wife of the first president of Mozambique, Samora Machel.

The Mozambican parliament Friday morning also observed a minute's silence to mourn the death of Nelson Mandela.

Former Mozambican Prime Minister Aires Ali said that it is now a moment to celebrate what the apartheid icon had done for humanity and a moment to evaluate the teachings he had transmitted.

"I think they will be of good use for the entire world, we all know his values and how they can help us live as brothers" said Ali.
