ANC NATIONAL EXECUTIVE COMMITTEE CONTINUES DEBATE ON ZUMA

South African President Jacob Zuma

The debate on the suitability of South Africa's President Jacob Zuma to continue leading the ANC will continue as the party's National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting was extended till Monday.

The fierce debate over Zuma's leadership was triggered on Saturday after Tourism Minister Derek Hanekom tabled a motion of no confidence in Zuma.

The committee, which is meeting in the capital, Pretoria, is the only body in the ruling party that can remove the leader of the party, besides its 5-yearly congress.

According to media reports, Hanekom's motion was strongly supported by Health Minister Aaron Motsoaledi, Public Works Minister Thulas Nxesi and ANC Chief Whip Jackson Mthembu.

Meanwhile, three other ministers - International Relations and Cooperation Minister Maite Nkoana-Mashabane, State Security Minister David Mahlobo, and Agriculture Minister Senzeni Zokwana - are part of those making strong arguments for Zuma's continued leadership.

The president's alleged improper relationship with the Gupta family, the decline in ANC support during local government elections and the Nkandla scandal were used as bases for him to step down.
