Angela Davis delivers the 17th Annual Steve Biko Memorial Lecture

African-American revolutionary and academic scholar Angela Davis on Friday evening delivered the 17th annual Steve Biko Memorial Lecture at University of South Africa (Unisa) in Pretoria.

Her lecture forms part of the activities marking this year's anniversary of the murder of anti-apartheid hero and Black Consciousness thinker, Steve Biko, who was assassinated by the apartheid forces on 12 September 1977.

Davis, a well known freedom fighter, was influenced by Black Power advocates and joined the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee (SNCC) and then the Black Panther Party in 1967. She moved further to the left in 1968 when she became a member of the Communist Party USA.
