Chinese president Xi Jinping has pledged US$100 million in military aid to the African Union over the next five years, reports Duowei News, a US-based Chinese political news outlet.

Xi made the announcement during an address to the 70th session of UN General Assembly in New York on Monday, noting that the money will be used to help create an African standby force and to boost its capacity to respond to crises.

In addition, Xi also said that China will contribute 8,000 troops to a UN peacekeeping standby force and spend US$1 billion to set up a China-UN peace and development fund.
