Fatoumata Tambajang becomes, at 67 years, the second woman to be appointed to this post in the history of The Gambia.

The Gambia officially has a vice-president. Since the election of Adama Barrow last December, the seat has been vacant.

The new president had initially appointed Fatoumata Tambajang to the post, before realizing that she had exceeded the constitutional age limit of 65 years.

Since then, Fatoumata Tambajang has been managing the de facto ministerial portfolio, while at the same time serving as Minister for Women's Rights.

But on Friday, September 8, the president was able to name her officially, ending 8 months of controversy.

Her appointment was made possible by a change in the constitution that was voted in July by the National Assembly. The government had tried to get this reform passed in February, but the legislative procedure was not properly followed and the vote was canceled.

There is no longer any age limit, and Fatoumata Tambajang becomes, at 67, the second woman to be named to this post in the history of the country.

The women's rights activist was one of the founders of the political coalition that managed to beat Yahya Jammeh in the December elections.

After completing some of his studies in France, Fatoumata Tambajang had briefly served under Jammeh as Minister of Health before obtaining a position with the United Nations.

This independent politician was a popular figure of the "new Gambia" until the controversy over her age. She has always claimed to be 64 years old, and many today blame her for having lied.

But her official appointment is also a relief: the country is finally in conformity with its Constitution which imposes the appointment of a person to this post.
