SACP General Secretary Dr. Blade Nzimande

The South African Communist Party (SACP) has at its ongoing 14th National Congress in Boksburg, outside Johannesburg, re-elected Dr. Blade Nzimande as its General Secretary.

Nzimande, who has held the position since 1998, had last year (2016) indicated his readiness to vacate the position.

"I think I have been here for too long," he told the Sunday Times on the sidelines of a Police and Prisons Civil Rights Union meeting.

"That is my feeling ... The SACP must continuously renew itself."

But as the party faces an unpredictable future, with relations with the ANC not good at the moment, many in the party feel that his services are still needed.

The SACP was among those who called for Zuma’s resignation following the saga that surrounded Zuma’s last cabinet reshuffle in which he removed Pravin Gordhan as the finance minister.

Meanwhile Solly Mapaila, who was expected to take over from Nzimande, has been elected as the party’s new First Deputy General Secretary after Jeremy Cronin declared his unavailability for re-election.

The new Second Deputy General Secretary is now Chris Matlhako, who was serving as the party’s Secretary for International Relations.

Joyce Moloi-Moropa was also re-elected as the national treasurer while Senzeni Zokwana and Thulas Nxesi retained their posts as national chairperson and deputy national chairperson, respectively.
