EIGHT KILLED IN GRENADE ATTACK ON BURUNDI PUB

Burundi President Pierre Nkurunziza

Eight people have been killed and another 50 injured in a grenade attack carried out on Sunday night by unknown persons in a pub on the Shinya Zone, Garatara Commune, in the province of Kayanza, in central Burundi.

Witnesses in Gatara told journalists that six of the victims had died on the scene, while two more people had died in hospital.

The Administrator of the commune, Dévote Ndayizeye, told reporters that those who carried out the attack were unknown at this stage. She branded the attackers "terrorists" who frightened the local population.

This is one of the worst attacks on civilians in the capital Bujumbura since the outbreak of the political crisis in 2015 when President Pierre Nkurunziza announced that he would run for a third term in office.

Human rights bodies have reported that more than 1,200 people have been killed in political violence since then.

Nkurunziza's regime has accused those opposed to his third term of being "terrorists" and "the enemy of peace". On the other side, the opposition have maintained that a third term was illegal and went against the Arusha Peace Agreement which is considered the cornerstone of efforts to bring about stability in Burundi.
